St. MARTIN of Tours (around 316 - 8 November 397), bishop. Born in Pannonia (Hungary), son of a military tribune of the Roman legion, he spent his childhood in Pavia, where his veteran father had been assigned a farm. In 331 he was forced by an imperial edict to enlist, stationed in Gaul in the ranks of the Imperial Guards with tasks of maintaining public order. During an nocturnal patrol the episode took place which gave a turning point to his existence: in the freezing winter of 335 he saw a beggar suffering from the cold, without asking questions he cut his military cloak in two and gave him half of it. The night saw in a dream Jesus dressed in his half cloak, who said to the angels: "Here is Martin, the Roman soldier who is not baptized, he has dressed me". On his awakening the cloak was intact. Already associated with Christianity, he received baptism, and remained in the army for twenty years as a Christian. After his leave he engaged in the fight against Arianism, which earned him exile from France and then from Milan, lived four years as a hermit on the Gallinara Island near Albenga, and finally returned to Poitier where a Catholic bishop had returned, there he became a monk by founding one of the first western monasteries in Ligugé. In 371 he was consecrated bishop of Tours, a bishop who however continued to live in the monastic house, maintaining contact with his diocesans, who continued to visit and assist personally, preaching, baptizing, evangelizing, founding small communities of monks, but also the great monastery of Tours. Patron of France and Hungary, of the infantry and of the Swiss Guard, as well as of beggars, foreigners, various arts and more than 150 locations only in Italy, popular devotion also attributes to him the "summer of San Martino", the warm days that remember the his generous gesture, following the first cold November.
