caption: Saint LORENZO O'Toole (1128 - November 14, 1180), archbishop of Dublin. Born in a noble Irish family, at age 28 he was already abate of Glendalough, where he had received his education. In 1162 Archbishop of Dublin was elected, where he took an intense reformation action. Mediator between the Irish and Anglo-Norman invaders, accepted the 'Laudabiliter' bubble with which Pope Hadrian II recognized Henry II's sovereignty over Ireland. In 1175, after having positively concluded a treaty between Henry II and Irish prince Rory O'Connor as he was about to celebrate Mass in Christ Church in Canterbury, an unbalanced man struck him at his head, causing him to fall; I resumed the senses, continued the celebration, and then wanted to intercede for her assailant, asking for him to forgive King Henry who had condemned him to hang. In 1179 he participated in the III Lateran Synod, with other Irish bishops, and Pope Alexander III appreciated his work and expanded the privileges of his diocese. Again in England for a new diplomatic mission to Henry II, he found the ruler irritated by the privileges granted by the Pope, with no intention of allowing him to return to Ireland and forcing him, to give him an audience, to follow him in Normandy. Finally Lorenzo got permission to return to Dublin, but he was ill on the way back to die in Eu at the monastery of Victorian canons.
