caption: San CLEMENTE (30-100), pope from 92 to 97, and a martyr. Few are certain biographical data, from the succession to the list of Roman popes, who see it in the third or fourth place after Peter. According to tradition, it was translated into Crimea by Trajan, and in order not to leave the Christian community without leadership renounced the papacy, it was therefore the first resignation in the history of the Pontiffs. In Crimea he was buried after being martyred serenely, his remains were moved to Rome around 868 by St. Cyril. Many are the writings attributed to Pope Clement, but the only one whose authenticity is attested is the Epistle to the Corinthians, in which he responded to the Corinthian Church who had resorted to him to deal with some internal conflicts, to prove the fact that in ancient times the Eastern Churches already recognized the greater authority of the Church of Rome.
