caption: Giovanni Antonio SOGLIANI (1492 - 15 July 1544), Italian painter; deeply religious, his work exemplifies the spirit of the Counter-Reformation. According to Vasari he was of a melancholy temperament, singularly slow and poised in execution, so much so that he could not complete many of his works because the clients died before he finished them, or in the throes of impatience they had them completed by other artists. The oval portrait is enclosed in a frame decorated with allegorical figures and instruments of the arts.
