St. JOHN CANON (circa 1397 - December 24, 1473), a Polish religious, confessor and writer. Born in Kety in the diocese of Krakow, he became a doctor and professor of philosophy and theology at the local university. Ordained priest, he spent some time in charge of the pastoral care of the Olkusz parish, to return to teaching. Humble and always devoted to the needs of the poor, he did four times the pilgrimage to Rome to visit the tombs of the apostles, and was also a pilgrim in Jerusalem, where he preached the Gospel to the Turks, who were unaware of the danger of martyrdom. He died in his Krakow while celebrating the Eucharist during Christmas Mass. Patron of Lithuania and Poland, where he commemorates October 20, in the Roman Martirology is remembered on December 23.
