The Romans believed it to be great, as Horace's verses remind us: "Pratensibus optima fungis, Natura est aliis male creditur". The common name describes the habitat of preference: it grows in meadows and fields, in numerous colonies that often form a circle called locally called "witch circle"; you can find it from the summer to the fall both in the plain and in the mountains, all over Italy, up to the altitude of 2,000 meters.
