caption: MASACCIO (21 December 1401 - summer 1428), nickname by which Tommaso di ser Giovanni di Mone Cassai is known, an Italian painter considered one of the three fathers of the Florentine Renaissance, with the sculptor Donatello and the architect Brunelleschi. His painting moved away from the artificiality of the international Gothic dominant, to seek a more naturalistic and real-life expression. The portrait is enclosed in a frame decorated with caryatids holding the instruments of art and an allegory of painting.
