caption: ANCIENT ROME ''Sophonisba fearlessly receives the poison sent to her by Massinissa''. Sophonisba (? - 203 BC), a Carthaginian noblewoman, daughter of Hasdrubal Gisco and wife of the elderly king of the Numidians, Syphax, had married him to strengthen the alliance with the Carthaginians against the Romans. After her husband's defeat in the Battle of the Campi Magni, Massinissa (240 BC – 148 BC) went to capture her, but fell in love with her, and she loved him, and married her. Since Scipio wanted to send her prisoner to Rome, fearing, not entirely unfounded, that she might incite her new husband against the empire, he sent his wife a cup of poison to spare her the humiliation of being reduced to chains. Sophonisba drank the tragic wedding gift, preferring to die rather than live as a Roman slave. Illustrated plate no. 20 from ''Roman History'' by Charles Rollin (January 30, 1661 – September 14, 1741), ''engraved in copperplate by the eminent Mr. Bartolomeo Pinelli Romano (November 20, 1781 – April 1, 1835), and engraved by Mr. Raffaele Persichini''. Rome, 1833.
