caption: ANCIENT ROME "The head of his brother Hasdrubal, defeated by Livy and Nero, is presented to Hannibal." The Carthaginian general Hasdrubal Barca (245 BC – 207 BC) was descending into Italy to bring reinforcements to his brother Hannibal (247 BC – 183 BC), who was engaged in the reconquest of Bruttium (Calabria). On June 22, 207 BC, he clashed with the combined forces of the Republican army commanded by the two consuls Marcus Livius Salinator and Gaius Claudius Nero in the Battle of the Metaurus in the Marches. The outcome of the battle, in which he died gloriously, was favorable to the Romans, and sealed the fate of the Second Punic War. The consul Nero, with contempt for his fallen adversary, ordered his head to be cut off and thrown into the Carthaginian camp, so that Hannibal would thus learn of his brother's death.
