The Roman lawyer, politician, writer, orator, and philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero (January 3, 106 BC - December 7, 43 BC), taking refuge in his villa in Formiae after being placed on the proscription list, falls victim to Mark Antony's assassins, aided by the freedman Philologus. Resigned, he impassively extends his neck from the litter, offering it to the sword of Herennius. Illustrated plate no. 38 from "Roman History" by Charles Rollin (January 30, 1661 - September 14, 1741), "engraved in copperplate by the eminent Bartolomeo Pinelli Romano (November 20, 1781 - April 1, 1835), and engraved by Raffaele Persichini."
