subject date: 2017-04-01

caption: ANCIENT ROME ''Julius Caesar, a prisoner of the corsairs, commands them imperiously, as if he were their master''. Gaius Julius Caesar (July 13, 101 BC or July 12, 100 BC – March 15, 44 BC) Roman soldier, consul, dictator, orator and writer, considered one of the most important and influential figures in history, was on his way to Rhodes when he was kidnapped by pirates in 74 BC; he insisted on more than doubling the ransom they intended to ask for his release, so that it was adequate for his person, and during the 38 days of his captivity he did nothing but treat his captors as if they were in his service, repeating to them that as soon as he was free he would immediately capture and punish them, which he duly did. Illustrated plate no. 31 from ''Roman History'' by Charles Rollin (January 30, 1661 – September 14, 1741), ''engraved in copperplate by the eminent Mr. Bartolomeo Pinelli Romano (November 20, 1781 – April 1, 1835), and engraved by Mr. Raffaele Persichini''. Rome, 1833.
