caption: ANCIENT ROME "Verres, a magistrate, wanting to kidnap a young woman, is defended by her father and brother." Gaius Verres (c. 120 BC – 43 BC), a corrupt and dissipated Roman legate on a diplomatic mission to Lampsacus in the Hellespont, lusting after the young daughter of Philodamos, orders his soldiers to kidnap her, who attempt to carry it out during a banquet in her father's house. The son, who rushes from the neighboring house, the servants, and the neighbors intervene to defend their beloved fellow citizens against the attackers, even killing a Roman lictor. The episode is reported by Cicero in the records of the trial brought against the magistrate by the Sicilians, of which he had been propraetor in 70 BC. Illustrated plate no. 29 from ''Roman History'' by Charles Rollin (January 30, 1661 – September 14, 1741), ''engraved in copperplate by the eminent Mr. Bartolomeo Pinelli Romano (November 20, 1781 – April 1, 1835), and engraved by Mr. Raffaele Persichini''.
