caption: ANCIENT ROME ''G. Marius, while hiding in a swamp, was discovered by his enemies''. Gaius Marius (157 BC - 86 BC), a Roman soldier and politician, when in 88 BC he was declared a public enemy by Sulla and forced to flee Rome, took refuge in the marshes of Minturnae. Located near Marica and captured, he was sentenced by the local magistrates to death at the hands of a Cimbrian slave. However, the slave, recognizing in the man the brave man who had defeated him in combat, was outraged by the dishonor to which he was being subjected and did not carry out the execution. According to Plutarch, the Minturnaeans, moved to pity, helped him board the ship of Beleus, bound for Africa, where he finally died near the ruins of Carthage. Illustrated plate no. 27 from ''Roman History'' by Charles Rollin (January 30, 1661 – September 14, 1741), ''engraved in copperplate by the eminent Mr. Bartolomeo Pinelli Romano (November 20, 1781 – April 1, 1835), and engraved by Mr. Raffaele Persichini''. Rome, 1833.
