Gaius Marius (157 BC - 86 BC) Roman military and politician, seven times consul of the Roman Republic. In 102 BC, during the fourth consulate, he stopped the descent of the Teutons by inflicting a disastrous defeat at the Battle of Aquae Sextiae, present-day Aix-en-Provence.
