caption: ANCIENT ROME ''Jugurtha, chained and taken prisoner, is handed over to Sulla by Bocchus''. Jugurtha (c. 160 BC - 104 BC), a Berber leader and ruler, king of Numidia, had been waging a series of conflicts against the Roman Empire since 112 BC, in alliance with his father-in-law Bocchus I, king of Mauretania. In 108 BC, Gaius Marius obtained his first consulate, and by forcing the African armies into a head-on clash, inflicted a stinging defeat. The king of Mauretania then entered into a secret agreement with the Romans, in the person of the young legate Lucius Cornelius Sulla (138 BC - 78 BC), to whom he handed Jugurtha over in 106 BC. Illustrated plate no. 25 from ''Roman History'' by Charles Rollin (January 30, 1661 – September 14, 1741), ''engraved in copperplate by the eminent Mr. Bartolomeo Pinelli Romano (November 20, 1781 – April 1, 1835), and engraved by Mr. Raffaele Persichini''.
