Of noble and rich origins, Piedmontese and Aosta, he fled from home to dedicate himself to religion despite his father's adverse wishes. Very well versed in his studies, the ecclesiastical career saw him prior of the Benedictine seminary of the Bec, where he had formed his culture with Lanfranco di Pavia, then archbishop of Canterbury.
