title: SAN EULOGIO MARTYR

subject date: 2017-03-09

caption: Sant'EULOGIO of Cordoba (about 800 - March 11 859) priest of Mozarabic Spain, martyr for the faith. The Christian community had relative freedom of worship in the Iberian Peninsula dominated by Muslims, who did not persecute it as long as they did not profess in public. Some more fervent believers, however, did not tolerate this restriction, coming to defy the Koranic law that provided for the death for the apostates and for anyone who openly did not bring respect for Islam. The priest Eulogio was the most representative of about forty intolerant Christians: with the intention of shaking the consciences of his fellow believers he spoke openly against Muhammad and the Koran inside a mosque; he was arrested and released in 851, shortly after the execution of the Saints Flora and Marta, to whom he attributed the miracle of his liberation. Eight years later he was again arrested and beheaded again, for hiding a young Muslim convert, guilty of the crime of apostasy for Islam. Regretted by the behavior of Christian extremists who deliberately provoked the deadly repression, the Islamic authorities contacted the ecclesiastical ones, who put an end to the events by attributing to those who subsequently repeated the gesture the suicidal status (condemned by Christianity) and no longer a martyr of faith . Saint Eulogio also wrote several essays on the lives of saints and martyrs. Commemoration 11 March, day of death (Dies Natalis, birth to heaven). Colored engraving, Italy 1886
