caption: St. JOHN OF GOD (8 March 1495 - 8 March 1550), Juan Ciudad, a Spanish religious of Portuguese origin, Founder of the Hospitaller Order 'Fatebenefratelli'. After an adventurous life that saw him as pastor, soldier, street vendor and finally bookseller in Granada, already inclined to follow the discovery inclination to care for the poor and the care of the sick, he was able to attend a sermon in San Giovanni d'Avila which gave a definitive turn to its existence. He left everything and dedicated himself to the collection of alms for the needy, addressing passers-by with the phrase that was the emblem of his existence: "do good, brothers, to yourselves". Having experienced firsthand the state of marginalization and abandonment of the sick in the care facilities, he decided to dedicate his life to the service of the sick, founding in 1539 his first hospital in which the care of the spirit was the premise for a profitable care of the body. Proclaimed saint by Pope Alexander VIII in 1690, is patron of nurses, doctors, hospitals, cardiopaths, booksellers, printers; commemoration on 8 March, day of death (Dies Natalis, birth to heaven).
