Blessed NICOLAO of Flüe (1417 - March 21, 1487), was born, lived and died in the small village of Flüeli Ranft am, in the canton of Obwalden in Switzerland, where he was a farmer, magistrate, deputy to the Federal Diet, soldier and officer in the Confederate, and loving husband and father of ten children. At age 50 he had a vision and he resolved to devote himself to the ascetic life, which he felt voted early in life; with the consent of the beloved wife and children of the biggest he withdrew in solitude, living since then meditation and the Eucharist alone. Completely illiterate, his "meditation book" consisted of a figure in the middle of a big wheel, from which departed rays representing the paths chosen by God to come to men, the paths of humility - the incarnation, passion, i sacraments - that reveal the greatness and divine tenderness. At his authoritative wisdom they resorted fellow citizens to settle disagreements in one of the most critical moments of the formation of the Swiss Confederation, and is therefore considered one of the Founding Fathers. Venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church, which commemorates the March 20, is the patron saint of Switzerland that instead celebrated on September 25. colored engraving, Italy 1886
