Saint PATRICK (born Maewyin Succat, circa 385 - 17 March 461) patron saint of Ireland, baptises the Irish. Born in Britain to a noble Roman and Christian family, he was kidnapped as a young man and translated into slavery in Ireland where he served for six years in the north of the island; having escaped and returned to his homeland, he entered the clergy and having gone to Gaul he was consecrated missionary bishop; he returned as an evangelist to Ireland around 432 and undertook an important work of conversion to Christianity, during which it is said he used the shamrock to explain the dogma of the Trinity with the three leaves on a single stem. Patron saint of Ireland, Nigeria, Montserrat, New York, Boston and of engineers, he is commemorated throughout the world on March 17, the day of death (Dies Natalis, birth to heaven).
