St. Paul of Thebes, First Hermit (around 228 -341 approximately), venerated by the Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church and the Coptic Church. Because of the persecution of the Roman emperors Decius and Valerian, the young Egyptian, denounced as a Christian by family who wanted his heritage, he was forced to leave the city for the desert. Here he lived up to 43 years by eating only dates and dressing woven palm leaves, then began receiving daily visits from a raven brought him half bread. Commemoration of January 15th. colored engraving, Italy 1886
