San Simeon Stylites (ca. 390 - 459 September 2), the Syrian monaco, said "the Elder" to distinguish him from Simeon Stylites the Younger. Christian ascetic, he chose to live for his last 37 years at the top of a column, the better to devote himself to contemplation and prayer, but without completely estranged from the world: it was available every day to receive pilgrims and visitors, who could approach him with a scale; also entertained correspondence with eminent personalities of the time, including the tradition counts St. Genevieve of Paris.
