Discovered in his activities he was sentenced to death and pierced by innumerable arrows on the Palatine hill, and here abandoned to the fairs by his executioners who thought he was dead. Relief and healed from Santa Irene, the emperor returned to proclaim the Christian faith, and was again sentenced to flogging in the hippodrome in Palatine until the occurrence of death, only to be thrown into the Cloaca Maxima. Revered as a saint by the Catholic Church and the Christian Orthodox Church, it is the subject of an ancient cult.
