caption: Johann Tserclaes (1559 - 1632) of Count Tilly, told The Monaco in armor; born in Belgium, then part of the Spanish Netherlands, it was one of the most celebrated commanders of the Catholic forces during the early stages of the Thirty Years War. Just fifteen enlisted in the Army of Spanish Flanders, he began a brilliant career that led him to be appointed, in 1610, commander of the forces of the Catholic League. In the Thirty Years' War he won a remarkable series of victories against the Protestant troops, but was defeated and killed at the Battle of Rain by troops under the command of Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden.
