caption: OTTOMAN EMPIRE. The massacres of Christians in Armenia. The Armenian population abandons the villages attacked and pillaged by the Turks of Sultan Abdul Hamid II. The family group walks away in dismay from the burning houses; the man at the end of the small procession turns and raises his fist to the Ottoman troops, suffering the injustice and longing for the moment of redemption. The number of victims during the three years of persecution, however high, is estimated by various sources at between 80,000 and 300,000 civilians (see details in FSNgilardi_70992.jpg).
