caption: Maria LECZINSKA (June 23, 1703 - June 24, 1768), daughter of Stanislaus, King of Poland, and Catherine of Opalinska. In 1725, she married Louis XV and bore him ten children. After her last, difficult birth, she separated from her husband, with whom she always maintained a dignified, formal relationship. She did not participate actively in the country's political life, but during the king's long absences, she often represented him at social gatherings. Popular with the people for her grace and benevolence, she was a lover of the arts and a patron of musicians, painters, and writers. Depiction inspired by the portrait painted by Jean-Marc Nattier in 1748. Colored lithograph, France, 19th century.
