title: ENRICHETTE OF BALSAC D'ENTRAGUES

subject date: 2016-06-13

caption: HENRIETTA de Balzac d'Entragues (1579 - February 9, 1633), daughter of François d'Entragues, governor of Orleans, and Marie Touchet, Charles IX's mistress. After the death of Gabrielle d'Estrées, Henry IV's mistress, he was struck by such passion for her that he even signed a promise of marriage (if she bore him a son), which Sully, the king's advisor, apparently forced. After giving birth to Gaston-Henry in 1601, Henrietta, leveraging the agreement, demanded that at least her son be legitimized and recognized as heir to the throne. The king agreed, but, not satisfied, she plotted a conspiracy with her half-brother Charles of Valois, which, thwarted, caused her to definitively lose the king's favor in 1608. Upon Henry IV's death, Queen Regent Marie de' Medici banished her from court. Colored lithograph, France, 19th century
