caption: MARIA THERESA OF AUSTRIA (September 10, 1638 - July 30, 1683), also known as Maria Teresa of Habsburg-Spain, was the daughter of Philip IV of Spain and Elisabeth of France. After 1658, at the end of the War of the Pyrenees, the royal families of France and Spain hoped for a lasting peace, which they intended to consolidate with the marriage of Maria Theresa and King Louis XIV of France. Cardinal Mazarin played a decisive role in the negotiations, displaying a parallel interest in the Savoy family when Spain was hesitating, quickly reaching an agreement that included, among other things, the Infanta's renunciation of succession to the Spanish throne and the provision of a substantial dowry. However, the failure to pay the dowry sparked a new conflict. The queen was gentle and pious and never had any influence at court; She had an affectionate relationship only with her mother-in-law (and aunt) Anne of Austria, had to put up with the presence of her husband's numerous mistresses, and acted as regent only on rare occasions, during the sovereign's absence for border wars.
