caption: Marie-Anne de Mailly-Nesles (October 5, 1717 - December 8, 1744) Marquise de la Tournelle, Duchess of Chateauroux. Widowed by the Marquis de la Tournelle at just 23, she joined her sisters at court and, like them, agreed to become Louis XV's favorite when the king became infatuated with her, after negotiating the terms. She quickly became quite powerful at court, making many enemies due to her proud, ambitious behavior and excessively lavish lifestyle. Having persuaded the king to command his armies himself in the War of the Austrian Succession, against the royal family's wishes, she accompanied him to Metz, but the king fell ill and returned to Paris in 1744, having dismissed her for reasons of convenience. Humiliated and furious, she had to leave him, but as soon as he recovered and called her back to court, while she was rushing to plot her revenge, she in turn fell ill and died before she could see him again.
