caption: GABRIELLA D'ESTRÉES (1571–April 10, 1599), daughter of Antoine d'Estrées, governor of the Ile-de-France. Henry IV of France met her in 1590 at Château de Coevres and was deeply passionate about her. He summoned her to court, married her to Damerval de Liancourt, and created the Duchy of Beaufort for her. Although he was married to Marguerite de Valois, the king did not hide his feelings for her, even in public; she, moreover, sincerely reciprocated, accompanying him everywhere, even to the battlefields and even during her pregnancies. A Catholic, she worked tirelessly with her sister Catherine, a Huguenot, to smooth over the differences between the two opposing religious factions, ultimately securing the adoption of the Edict of Nantes. When, in 1599, Pope Clement VIII granted the king the annulment of his marriage to Marguerite de Valois, he immediately gave La Favorita (a title created especially for her) an engagement ring; however, she died suddenly, a few days after giving birth prematurely to her fourth child, who was already stillborn, probably poisoned.
