caption: CHARLES IX (June 27, 1550 - May 30, 1574) King of France, second son of Henry II and Catherine de Medici. At just ten years old, on the death of his eldest son Francesco II, he ascended the throne under the regency of his mother. Wars of religion raged during his reign, despite Catherine's diplomatic efforts. After several battles and short-lived peace treaties, the two Catholic and Huguenot factions signed the peace of Saint-Germain (1570), which included, among other things, the marriage of Margaret of Valois, the king's sister, to Henry of Navarre (Huguenot, future King Henry IV). However, during the wedding celebrations, celebrated after long diplomatic negotiations two years later, the king ordered the elimination of Admiral Gaspard de Coligny and some other Protestants, but the situation got out of hand to the executors, starting the massacre of the Huguenots in what is sadly known as "St Bartholomew's night", August 24, 1572.
