title: DUCHESS OF ETAMPES

subject date: 2016-06-03

caption: ANNE de Pisseleu d'Heilly (1508 - about 1580), Duchess of Etampes; bridesmaid of Luisa of Savoy, mother of Francis I, of which she became the Favorita on his return from Spanish captivity. To justify his presence at the Court, the king had her married to Jean de Brosse, bringing him the dowry of the county of Estampes that in honor of her was elevated to a duchy. The lady had much influence on the king, for 22 years, and brought divisions and quarrels at court; he is said to have convinced him to sign the Crépy Treaty. At his death he was accused of spreading state secrets and was forced to make all the gifts received by the sovereign, including the duchy of Etampes, which was assigned to Diana of Poitiers, his greatest persecutor and favorite of the new king Henry II. Court expulsion, returned to his native land, embraced Protestantism and died in abandonment. Colored lithography, France, 19th century
