caption: ANNE OF BRITTANY (January 25, 1477 - January 9, 1514), eldest daughter of Duke Francis II and Marguerite de Foix. Duchess of Brittany following the disputed succession to her father in 1488, she was first Queen of France in 1491 through her marriage to Charles VIII; she was widowed without heirs and remarried, as per her marriage contract, to her successor, Louis XII, becoming Queen of France for the second time in 1499. From this last marriage were born her daughters Claude, future wife of Francis I and Queen of France, and Renée. She was nicknamed "The Duchess with Wooden Clogs." Depiction inspired by a miniature from "Les Grandes Heures d'Anne de Bretagne" by Jean Bourdichon. Colored lithograph, France, 19th century
