caption: LA BELLE FERRONIERE (THE BEAUTIFUL IRONWORKER) it is said that this name derives from her husband's profession, which was manufacturing and selling wrought iron objects, or from his surname: Ferron. Mistress of Francis I of France, she may have been responsible for the king's death, having infected him with syphilis, perhaps even after being deliberately infected by her husband in revenge against the two adulterers; but this story may be nothing more than a legend. The depiction is inspired by the "Portrait of a Lady" painted by Leonardo Da Vinci around 1493, for which it is speculated that the subject may have been Lucrezia Crivelli or Cecilia Gallerani, lovers of Ludovico il Moro, or other noblewomen of the Sforza court. The name "Belle Ferronnière," by which the work is known, would have been attributed in the late 18th century because "ferroniere" is also the name of the jewel the young woman wears on her forehead, so called because it was habitually worn by Madame Ferron.
