caption: Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von HOHENHEIM (14 November 1493 - 24 September 1541) called Paracelsus; Swiss doctor, alchemist and astrologer. A multifaceted but controversial figure, highly representative of the Renaissance, he revisited the theories on the composition and changes of matter by adding the three new elements salt, sulfur and mercury to the four of Aristotle's doctrine. He also reinterpreted medicine in a completely innovative way, rejecting its traditional conception in favor of iatrochemistry, a new discipline of his own for the treatment of diseases with mineral substances, which paved the way for modern pharmacology.
