caption: Sir John Eldon GORST (1861-1911) British colonial diplomatic agent. Born in New Zealand where his father worked as an intermediary between the Maori and the British government, he was raised in London; after completing his studies as a lawyer he was sent to Egypt with the role of controller of direct taxes; here he embarked on a rapid career, which led to his appointment as Consul General in 1907.
