caption: Pio FOÀ (1848-1923) Italian pathologist and politician, Senator of the Kingdom. Still a boy, he participated as a Garibaldian volunteer in the Third War of Independence. He then graduated from the University of Pavia and began a long and fruitful career as a university lecturer and researcher, combining scientific activity with civil and political commitment with particular regard to health education and the fight against tuberculosis.
