Leonore as Fidelio, with the jailer Rocco dig the grave in the cell Florestan, and recognizes hearing desperate whisper his name. The first presentation is November 20, 1805 in the Theater an der Wien (Vienna) was not successful, and the Master was forced to withdraw. Only in 1814, after several revisions which led to even the reduction from three to two acts, the lyrical drama finally met and definitely the favor of the public.
