caption: SMO: A brazer worker at work, a striking, dynamic portrait of a worker welding in a workshop in a department of the Pignone foundry in Florence. The workers were on strike since July 1953 following the dismissal of union leader Franco Fantini. When the owners decided to lay off everyone and shut down the plant, the work continued under self-management for a long period, from November 1953 to January 1954, to avert the spectre of unemployment for the 1,750 workers. The protest attracted widespread support, and the dispute ultimately concluded with Eni's acquisition of the abandoned factory from Snia Viscosa.
