caption: SANT ABATE ALFREDO name Italianate or Ethelred of Aelred of Rievaulx (Aelredus Rievallensis, 1110-1167), Anglo-Saxon monaco, abbot of the Cistercian Abbey of Rievaulx in 1147. As a young man he was Governor of the palace of King David I (the future Saint David of Scotland) but he did not appear seduced by the siren song of court life, who left at twenty-five preferring the Cloister; here taking an exemplary monastic life was soon elected Abbot.
