caption: BIBLE Book of Leviticus "The Goat Emissary" Atonement Rite On the day of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) the community of Israelites offered two goats, equal to each other, to be sacrificed in the Temple of Jerusalem in expiation for their sins. The high priest chose by lot between the two goats, one (scapegoat) was immolated on the altar of sacrifices, at the entrance of the temple building and his blood was used to purify the temple and the altar desecrated by the sins of the Israelites (Leviticus Lev. 16, 5-10). then the high priest placed his hands on the head of the other goat and confessed the sins of the people of Israel, freed the animal in a desert area about 12 kilometers from Jerusalem, where according to rabbinic tradition it was thrown from a cliff.
