ARCHAEOLOGY the Colossus of Rhodes, statue of the god Helios, built in the port of Rhodes in Greece in the third century BC The construction was entrusted to Chares of Lindos which had already built statues of large size, and ended in 293 BC, after 12 years. The statue remained standing for 56 years, until Rhodes was hit by an earthquake in 226 BC, that brought down the statue in the sea.
