From the first decade of the 21st century, this ethnic minority fights for the defense of the ancestral holy hill against a British mining company, which would like to extract the bauxite by digging a mine in the heart of the tribe's lands. Thanks also to the solidarity movement raised in the public opinion by Survival International, in 2013 the Indian Supreme Court recognized the rights of the Dongria Kondh in the hills of Niyamgiri, now the final decision lies with the Indian Ministry of the Environment.
