He was Count of Cotignola and progenitor of the Sforza dynasty of the Dukes of Milan. The illegitimate son Francesco, first Sforza Duke of Milan, on marrying Bianca Maria Visconti adopted her surname and coat of arms; it was then his children (grandchildren of Muzio Attendolo) who took the paternal surname. The coat of arms shows a rampant golden lion holding a green quince branch on a blue field. It is surmounted by the helmet of the Sforza family with a crest in the shape of a crested dragon with a human head, and the diamond ring donated by the Marquis of Ferrara in 1409 for services rendered.
