caption: LAVORO (Work) ''A Fist of Mud'', photoshoot by Ando Gilardi (1921 - 2012) #andogilardi made in Venosa, after the news events related to the killing of the agricultural laborer Rocco Girasole by the police on 13 January 1956 during the strike on the reverse, a demonstration of unemployed laborers who voluntarily carried out public maintenance work on the road which had been made a river of mud by the recent snowfalls; in this way they highlighted, making themselves useful, both their own inactivity due to the failed promised distribution of the lands, and the length of time taken by the authorities to restore the roads. In the photos: via Frusci and the bell tower of the co-cathedral of Sant'Andrea Apostolo, the street full of mud with the entrance to the poor homes of the laborers (see 17733); the tomb of Rocco Girasole, the cemetery workers and some local leaders of the PCI posing next to the crown of the workers of Banzi (see 17706); carved lion almost three thousand years old at the entrance to the little bridge that leads to the fortress where the Chamber of Labor is located, whose window and sign can be seen in the background (see 17710); children playing in the street between the houses in Via Roma, where you can see the piles of mud piled up by the demonstrators during the reverse strike (see 17773); children with painted paper masks celebrate the carnival, traces of mud still remain in the pavement (see 17784).
