title: SAINT PANTALEO RESURRECTS A CHILD

subject date: 2012-02-04

caption: SAINT PANTALEON of Nicomedia (or Pantaleon, 3rd century - July 27, 305), asked God to resurrect the child bitten by a viper by taking the viper's life, offering his own dedication in exchange, if he deemed him worthy. Hearing his prayers, he was baptized and dedicated his life to providing free medical care to the needy, healing in the name of Christ. According to the Passio, the saint, personal physician to Caesar Galerius, became a Christian and was martyred during the Diocletianic persecutions. The patron saint of physicians (along with Saints Cosmas and Damian) and midwives, he is venerated as a saint by numerous Christian churches and is among the Fourteen Auxiliary Saints (he is invoked against consumption-related illnesses). Devotional image, 19th century.
