Kateri TEKAKWITHA (1656 - April 17, 1680) Lily of the Mohawk, a native of Osserneon, New York, to a Catholic Algonquin mother and a father of traditional faith, tribal chief of the Mohawk village of Osserneon. In 1660 she survived the smallpox epidemic that left her face disfigured and her eyesight severely impaired. Baptized in Albany by French missionaries, she fled to Canada to escape the wrath of her pagan relatives. There she lived in prayer. On March 25, 1679, she took a vow of perpetual virginity. Destroyed by illness and suffering, she died on April 17, 1680, at just 24 years of age; after her death, the marks of smallpox disappeared from her face. The cause for her beatification was promoted in 1884: Pius XII declared her venerable in 1943, she was beatified on June 22, 1980, by Pope John Paul II, and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 21, 2012, the first Native American to be proclaimed a saint. Photolithographic image, Canada, circa 1950.
