CALIGULA (known as Gaius Caesar Germanicus), the third Roman emperor (37-41 AD), began his reign well, but soon showed signs of unbalance: he was mad and cruel. He undertook absurd wars, such as one against the Ocean, and committed shameful acts. To put an end to his mad enterprises, a committee of conspirators was formed who assassinated him in his home. Chromolithograph, E. Sborgi, Florence, circa 1915.
