title: THE OLD SAW

subject date: 2011-04-11

caption: SACRED AND PROFANE ''Sega la Vecchia'', half-Lent rite of the peasant world: a character in the drama. In the staging carried from house to house, the old oak tree is identified and ''cut down'' by two ''sawyers'', but foreign assassins kill it before they can dissect it; at this point her old husband comes looking for her, and out of pity for him everyone works hard to bring her back to life (starting with the old man who pities her by ''embracing'' her with passion). The operation will succeed perfectly: she will come out alive and fruitful amidst joy and dancing, symbolizing the eternal spring rebirth. The allegorical representation of a caricatural nature was particularly practiced in Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna and Umbria. Part of the photographic service documenting the musical anthropology investigation carried out by Diego Carpitella (1924 - 1990) and Tullio Seppilli (1928 - 2017) for the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome. Photography by Ando Gilardi (1921 - 2012) #andogilardi. Italy, 1958.
