caption: Giuseppe MAZZINI (June 22, 1805 – March 10, 1872), Italian patriot, politician, philosopher, and journalist. Founder of Young Italy, Young Europe, the Italian National Association, and finally the Action Party, he was a leading figure in the Risorgimento movement that led to the unification of Italy, albeit under a single crown and not in the form of a democratic republic he unwaveringly supported. His refusal to swear allegiance to the King cost him the possibility of benefiting from the amnesty and exile. He died in Pisa, where he had returned clandestinely under false pretenses.
